Cela fait le troisième ouvrage, en l’espace de six ans, consacré au Kitāb de Sībawayhi ( ii e / viii e siècle), le troisième et dernier, il est vrai, pouvant passer pour complémentaire du second, lui-même complémentaire du premier. Après le Sībawayhi de Carter, paru en 2004, ouvrage de synthèse sur la vie et l’œuvre de Sībawayhi 1 , on a eu The Legacy of the Kitāb de Baalbaki, paru en 2008 et consacré, comme son titre l’indique, à l’héritage de Sībawayhi (c’était le titre du dernier chapitre de l’ouvrage de Carter) 2 . Dans cet ouvrage, Baalbaki développait la thèse, déjà formulée par Carter, que Sībawayhi proposait en son Kitāb une analyse originale, non reprise par la grammaire postérieure, et que cette analyse, selon l’hypothèse de Jean-Patrick Guillaume, était de type « énonciatif », on dirait aujourd’hui « pragmatique ».
