Up until about a decade or so ago a handful of academic (and popular) books had been written on this important metaphor which was also relatively unknown within the Christian church. In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in adoption—mostly in the USA—as evidenced by the number of books, articles, and blog entries devoted to its study. Garner’s reflection on this term over the last fifteen years has matured since I examined an earlier version of this volume in the form of his doctoral thesis (2002) when he was a student at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, USA.Garner writes as a conservative and reformed theologian who seeks to answer “the systematic theological questions” (xvi) to do with “adoption.” The book comprises three main sections.
