Th is monograph had its origin in a doctoral dissertation at the University of Aarhus, Denmark. It is part of the veritable resurgence of interest in the Herodian house (and its various members) and in ancient Galilee. Th e recent steady fl ow of of research on these subjects has helped scholars to better understand the Herodians and the area they ruled, subjects that are of interest in their own right. It has also provided scholars with fresh insights, new methodological approaches and challenges to long-cherished interpretations of the background of the New Testament generally, the historical Jesus, the Jesus tradition and the book of Acts. Jensen does not attempt to describe Antipas’s personal character nor does he provide a general Vita of Antipas. Instead, his focus is on the socio-economic impact of Antipas’s reign on Galilee.
