Alan Sell is a prolifi c writer on a wide range of theological and philosophical themes. In this Paternoster series there is ample scope for his historical interests as well. He is convinced that formu lations of theological truth from past generations have much to teach those who come later and should not be allowed to be forgotten. In addition, he feels “a special voca- tion to enquire what the English theological heritage has to off er.” (xiii) Th e book is a demonstration that this heritage is much richer than is usually thought, both within and beyond the borders of England. Th e book is a collection of essays, not all new, gathered around the three themes named in the title.
