Brümmer on Meaning and the Christian Faith. Th eology as an academic discipline lives a problematic life in Europe. It is called in question from two sides. Scholars in other disciplines at the universities often see theology as an activity foreign to the academy because it builds on doctrinal traditions of a specifi c church instead of sharing common human conditions in a careful critical search of knowledge. Th e churches, on the other side, often look at academic theology as too separated from the actual life of the churches and of minor help in their ordinary work. But those who read the recently published collected writings by Vincent Brümmer will fi nd strong and clear arguments for a theology that can meet both kinds of criticism. Brümmer presents a theol- ogy that has a fi rmly established academic philosophical methodology leading to results of utmost importance to the preaching and teaching of the churches.
