In the present study we have demonstrated that, in the pituitary of the ageing male rat, two subpopula- tions of growth hormone (GH)-producing cells occur that differ in morphological, molecular and functional aspects. These results may provide a cellular basis to the understanding of changes in GH through ageing. KEY WORDS: cell heterogeneity, growth hormone, agcing. Many investigators have suggested that populations of classic pituitary cell types may consist of subtypes showing different morphology and/ or functionality (TAKAHASHI, 1992). The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of subpopulations of somatotrope cells in the pituitary gland of the male rat, and to determine their morphological, molecular and functional characteristics.
