Dr. Reuben Lorenzo Hill Jr REUBEN HILL Dr. Reuben Lorenzo Hill Jr. This special issue on "The Family in its Social Setting" honours a distinguished sociologist who has spent his lifetime in family research and teaching. Born in Utah in I9I2, he was educated at Utah State University and at the universities of Wisconsin (Ph. D. -r938) and Chicago. Together with Marion, his wife and five children, he has a happy family life in their Present hotrle near the University of Minesota, Minneapolis, U.S.A. After a teaching career in South Dakota, Iowa and North Carolina, he is now Director of the Minnesota Family ,Study Center and Research Professor of Sociology at the Univeysity of Minne- sota. As a writer, four of his eight major books are models of their kind and one has been a best seller over the past ten years: Families under Stress, 1949, analysed the effects of tlae wartime absence and return of the father on the family; The Family. A Dynamic Interpretation, I95I an original classic by Willard Walley which was so transfornzed by Dr. Hill's revision that it became a new classic presentation; Family and Population Control (with J.
