There is a great need for books that gather all that is known about plant-parasitic nematodes, even when their influence is less understood. Many tylenchs occur together in the same soil with such genera as Heterodera , Globodera , Meloidogyne and Pratylenchus but cannot be identified. I published four books on the families Tylenchidae, Criconematidae, Dolichodoridae and Pratylenchidae. Dr Subbotin informed me, some time ago, that he was involved in preparing a book on the Hemicycliophoroidea. The result is excellent! Not only are all the species well treated but the vast literature containing remarks and measurements about well known species is also included; this gives descriptions of sometimes ten pages long (including figures) with 15 pages for the type species. All former synonymisations are re-examined (and not always accepted) and a few new ones are proposed ( H. sculpturata Loof, 1984 is proposed as a junior synonym of H. typica de Man, 1921; H. italiae Brzeski & Ivanova, 1978 as a junior synonym of H. minora Wu, 1966; and H. shepherdi Wu, 1966 as junior synonym of H. similis Thorne, 1955). Identification can be done by a polytomous key and by a dichotomous key. Throughout the book the most important character utilised is the shape of the posterior end: it is used as the first character in both keys and also in the ‘Relationships’ at the end of the species’ descriptions. Although that character has been often used in earlier keys, the interpretation of the ‘tail shape’ is not always as clear cut as the authors suggest. I sincerely hope that other nematologists with some experience in identification will start writing such books as several (super)families still need to be examined. They can use this book by Chitambar and Subbotin as a good example.
