Mediterranean Sea, at 4 stations of the continental shelf and slope above depths of 10, 30, 70 and 1250 m. An accumulation of specimens in the surface layer occurred at dusk at all the stations. This species exhibit a hyponeustonic distribution throughout the night. The upward migration in the evening and the downward migration in the morning were very fast, only few animals were collected in the deep layers during the night. None were caught in the upper layers during diurnal catches. Series of surface plankton hauls sampled in the axis and on both sides of submarine canyons, above depths from 50 to 2000 m, show that E. truncata may perform vertical migrations that are much greater than 500 m.
