Box 9517, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands Erling Sivertsen was born on 21 December 1904 in Tromso in northern Norway. His father, Vilhelm Sivertsen was a schoolteacher and later became inspector of taxes in Tromso. Erling's mother was Alida Fredrikke Dahl. Sivertsen spent his youth in Tromso, where he also got his early education. In 1923 he started his university studies at Oslo University, at that time the only university in Norway. His zoology teacher was the well known Christine Bonnevie. In 1929 Sivertsen was appointed scientific assistant at the Tromso Museum; but even before that time (since 1923) he had been working in the Museum and in 1927 published an article on Decapod and Mysid Crustacea in its collection. In 1930 followed his appointment as scientific assistant of the fish hatchery station at Flodevigen near Arendal in South Norway, where A. Dannevig was the director. Here Sivertsen worked on fishery biology and pub- lished a study on the reproductive cycle of the cod, Gadus morhua L. This study was accepted by Oslo University as his master thesis (1935).
