NASIMA M. TIRMIZI & QUDDUSI B. KAZMI, 1984. A handbook on a Pakistani Mantis Shrimp Oratosquilla.... 315 REVIEWS P. T. HARDING & S. L. SUTTON, 1985. Woodlice in Britain and Ireland; distribution and habitat, 152 pp. Institute of Terrestrial Ecology, Monks Wood Experimental Station, Abbots Ripton, Huntingdon PE 17 2 LS, England. Price £ 5.50. ISBN 0 904282 85 6. In this book the results of 16 years of research by the members of the British Isopoda Study Group have been compiled. During these years, 27,128 isopod records were collected throughout Britain and Ireland by 436 members of the group. A total of 35 species of Oniscoidea has been found, three of which could be added to the British fauna-list, while one other species viz., Metatrichoniscoides celticus Oliver & Trew, 1981, proved to be undescribed. A species previously recorded in the area, Acaeroplastes melanurus (Budde-Lund, 1885) could, in spite of special efforts, not be recovered and consequently has to be assumed extinct. Ten alien species, mainly known from glasshouses etc., were not included in the investigations. Specific difficulties like bias in recording and identification problems have been carefully dealt with by additionally visiting underrecorded areas, by specifically collecting at underrecorded times of day and season and by checking all "critical" records. This very successful cooperation of both amateurs and professionals is probably the only way of collecting data at such a scale. The accounts thus make a thorough, reliable guide, in which detailed information about distribution and habitat of ter- restrial isopods can be found. In particular the ecological data provided, might become a very important stimulus for gathering further information, not only in the area at present covered, but also in the greater part of Northwestern Europe. P. H. M. HUWAE NASIMA M. TIRMIZI & QUDDUSI B. KAZMI, 1984. A handbook on a Pakistani Mantis Shrimp Oratosquilla. In: R. B. Published by Centre of Excellence Marine Biology, University of Karachi, Karachi-32, Pakistan. Price: Rupees 60 ( = about U.S. $4.-). This handbook continues a tradition first started by the "LMBC (= Liverpool Marine Biology Committee) Memoirs on typical marine plants and animals" and later also adopted in "The Indian zoological memoirs on Indian animal types". Each volume of those two series was devoted to a single species as the representative of a group; a very detailed morphological and anatomical description was provided of the species. The present volume is the first ever to treat in this way a Stomatopod Crustacean. In the in- troduction both the order of the Stomatopoda and the genus Oratosquilla are defined and their taxonomic position discussed; a key to the Pakistani species of the genus is provided. The exter- nal morphology of Oratosquilla nepa (Latreille, 1825) is discussed in detail (pp. 8-38), followed by a description of the internal anatomy of the species (endophragmal skeleton, the circulatory, respiratory, excretory, digestive, reproductive and nervous systems; pp. 39-77), and short ac- counts of the larvae, the biology and economic use of the animals (pp. 77-87). An extensive bibliography ends the book. The text is clear and the illustrations excellent. Both the names of the authors and that of the editor guarantee the quality of this publication, which is a great asset to Stomatopod literature. It is hoped that more volumes of a similar kind will be published in this series. L. B. HOLTHUIS http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Crustaceana Brill
