104 NOTES AND NEWS THE 'SOFT PARTS' OF SAIPANETTA TUMIDA (BRADY, 1890) (OSTRACODA, METACOPINA), WITH AN EXPANSION OF THE DIAGNOSIS OF SAIPANETTIDAE BY K. G. McKENZIE British Museum (Natural History), London, Great Britain In 1967 I published a description of an ostracode 'living fossil' from Saipan (McKenzie, 1967a, b) and subsequently made a necessary nomenclatural correction (McKenzie, 1968). On 6th May 1968, a microslide which contained a saipanettid with the soft anatomy retained within tlie carapace arrived at the British Museum (Natural History). The slide was sent to me by W. M. Briggs, Jr., Department of Geology, Victoria University of Wellingtcn, New Zealand. Briggs had correctly identified the species as Saipanetta tumida (Brady, 1890). The locality for this specimen was Sample GOC-30, Onotoa Atoll, in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. The sample was collected by P. E. Cloud, Jr., and D. E. Strasbourg on 1st August, 1951, off the southern tip of the northeastern island of the atoll, in shallow protected water behind the reef front on a dead reef surface which generally had a gravel veneer (Cloud, 1952, fig. 2).
