On the Maxillule of the Shrimp Penaeus Indicus H. Milne Edwards (Decapoda, Penaeidea)

On the Maxillule of the Shrimp Penaeus Indicus H. Milne Edwards (Decapoda, Penaeidea) 322 ON THE MAXILLULE OF THE SHRIMP PENAEUS INDICUS H. MILNE EDWARDS (DECAPODA, PENAEIDEA) BY N. ALAM KHANDKER and ZOGHLUL KABIR Department of Zoology, University of Dacca, Dacca, East Pakistan The number of segments of the palp of the maxillule has been used as a character to separate Penaeus orientali.r Kishinouye from Penaeus indicus H. Milne Edwards, P. rnerguiensis de Man, and P. pentcillattt.r Alcock. The first species is said to have 3 segments and the others 2 segments. Dall (1957) also used the length of the third periopod as a distinguishing character and in P. orientali.r it does not exceed the scaphocerite. Mahmood (1967) also reported two segments in the palp in P. indicu.r. But recently Tirmizi (1969) observed that the number is not fixed at two, but may vary from 2 to 4. Moreover, both sides may not even have the same number of segments. We had some material of P. indicus from Bagerhat in East Pakistan, in the Sundarban estuary about 40 miles inland from the Bay of Bengal, collected between December, 1968 and August, 1969. In total, we examined 54 males (carapace length 10.5 to 24.5 mm) and 50 females (carapace length 12.5 to 23.0 mm). In all the specimens examined there were 2 segments in the palp on both left and right sides. So, this observation differs from that of Tirmizi but agrees with others. We had in our collection 6 males and 2 females identified as P. orientali.r. The specimens were collected along with P. indicus from the same area in Bagerhat. In all of them the length of the third periopod did not exceed the scaphocerite and the shape of the genital organs agreed with P. orieyttali.r described by Kubo (1949). But in all of them there were 2 segments, and not 3, in the palp of the maxillule. It appears that the length of the third periopod is a valid character to distinguish between P. orientali.r and other mentioned species, while the number of segments in the palp may not be a reliable one.
