INTRODUCTION _ - --- "Knowledge of the cumacean fauna of the Pacific coast of North America is so slight that every new collection from that region contributes important information". This statement, made by Carl Zimmer in the introduction to his 1936 paper on the Cumacea of California, is as true today as it was then, for this was the last major work done on the cumacean Crustacea in that region. In 1943 Zimmer worked on collections from the entire Pacific area and mentioned (: 147-172) a few more California species. Both the 1936 and 1943 collections, however, were extremely small and served only to provide a few specimens for description of new species. It has been the privilege of this writer to be associated with one of the most extensive sampling programs ever conducted on the southern California mainland shelf.
