A New Species of Merhippolyte (Decapoda Natantia) From East American Waters

A New Species of Merhippolyte (Decapoda Natantia) From East American Waters A NEW SPECIES OF MERHIPPOLYTE (DECAPODA NATANTIA) FROM EAST AMERICAN WATERS BY L. B. HOLTHUIS Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden Among unidentified Decapoda in the collection of the United States National Museum, Washington, D.C., four specimens of a species of A1erhiPpolyte were found, which proved to be new to science. The material was collected by the steamer "Albatross" in deeper waters off the east coast of America. Until now the genus Merhippolyte was only known from South Africa, India and Hawaii. Another interesting feature of the present species is that though it is new in the sense that it has not been described before as a distinct species, a description and a figure of it have been published as long ago as 1930. Boone (1930: 135, pl. 46) then gave a reasonably good figure and a two-page description, based on two female specimens which had been dredged by the "Ara" off Alligator Reef, Florida. Though the description and the figure clearly show the hippolytid nature of the species, Boone assigned her material to the oplophorid Sy.rtella.rpi.r debilif (A. Milne Edwards), an error which until now has remained uncorrected.
