Mothocya collettei Bruce, 1986 (Isopoda, Cymothoidae), a marine fish parasite new to Japan

Mothocya collettei Bruce, 1986 (Isopoda, Cymothoidae), a marine fish parasite new to Japan Isopods of the cymothoid genus Mothocya Costa in Hope, 1851 are ectoparasites of marine fishes (Bruce, 1986). To date, five nominal species of the genus have been reported from waters around Japan, viz., M. komatsui Yamauchi, 2009, M. melanosticta (Schioedte & Meinert, 1884), M. parvostis Bruce, 1986, M. renardi (Bleeker, 1857) and M. sajori Bruce, 1986 (Bruce, 1986; Yamauchi, 2009). An undescribed species of Mothocya, which somewhat resembles M. pananica Bruce, 1986 and M. ihi Bruce, 1986, is also known to occur in Japan (Bruce, 1986: 1178). Moreover, unidentified individuals of Mothocya have been recorded from various marine fishes in Japan (see Yamauchi, 2016). Recently, a cymothoid isopod identifiable as M. collettei Bruce, 1986, was collected in Japanese waters. This collection constitutes the first Japanese record of M. collettei, which is the sixth nominal species of the genus in the country. In this note, the specimen is briefly described, and the known host and geographical records of the species are reviewed. A key to the six nominal species of Mothocya from Japan is also given. The ovigerous female of M. collettei, 27.5 mm in length, was collected from the gill cavity of a hound needlefish, Tylosurus crocodilus (Péron & Lesueur, 1821), http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Crustaceana Brill

Abstract

Isopods of the cymothoid genus Mothocya Costa in Hope, 1851 are ectoparasites of marine fishes (Bruce, 1986).
