Box 9516, NL-2300 RA Leiden, Netherlands Ján Brtek, one of the pioneers of limnology and of the taxonomy of Bran- chiopoda in Europe, passed away after a serious illness on 23 October 2005. His untimely death has left a tremendous rift in the lives of his family and friends, as well as in the scientific community. Ján Brtek was born on the 28 th of September 1926 in Trnava, Slovakia, as the oldest of three sons (Ján, Vladimír, L’ubomír) in the family of Ján Brtek, a zoological taxidermist, and his wife Jozefina. In 1932 he began to attend a basic school in his birth town and from 1937 to 1945 was a student at the Bishop grammar school. After World War II, the family moved to Bratislava, where his father found a position as zoological preparator
