REVIEWS REVIEWS C. B RÖNM ARK & L.-A. H AN SSON , 1998. The biology of lakes and ponds: 1-216. (Oxford University Press, Oxford). ISBN 0-19-85493-5 (paperback). Price £ 19.50 (approx. US$ 31.00). The Biology of Lakes and Ponds is one of the books in the Biology of Habitats series, a very good, sometimes even excellent series published by Oxford University Press. The book presents up-to-date, well-illustrated and very clear overviews of modern approaches and Ž ndings with respect to freshwater ecosystems. It combines Ž eld observations, mesocosm experiments, and laboratory experiments with theoretical background to explain the functioning of organisms within the ecosystem. The structure of the book is based on adaptations enabling organisms to cope with abiotic factors and discusses the importance of biotic processes and interactions in food webs. This means that the book is written from a clearly ecological point of view, thus Ž lling the gap between limnological and evolution-orientedbooks. The books contains six chapters, entitled ‘Introduction’, ‘The abiotic frame and adaptations to cope with abiotic constraints’, ‘The organisms: the actors within the abiotic frame’, ‘Biotics: competition, herbivory, predation, parasitism, and symbiosis’, ‘Food web interactions in freshwater ecosystems’, and ‘Environment and conservation’.
