DISTRIBUTION OF EURYCERCUS ( TERETIFRONS ) GLACIALIS LILLJEBORG, 1887 (CLADOCERA, CHYDORIDAE) ON THE KURIL ARCHIPELAGO BY NOBORU MINAKAWA 1 ) and SUSUMU TANAKA 2 ) 1 ) 1-6-32 Komatsu, Konosu, Saitama 365, Japan 2 ) Department of Education, Toyama University, 316 Gofuku, Toyama, Toyama 930, Japan Eurycercus glacialis Lilljeborg, 1887, one of the largest cladoceran species, occurs in ponds and pools of the Arctic and Subarctic regions, and it was also recorded from Europe and North America at lower latitudes (Frey, 1971). Its distribution at lower latitudes includes Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Scotland, and Ireland (Frey, 1975; Duigan & Frey, 1987). In North America, Daggett & Davis (1975) recorded it from Newfoundland. However, the taxon found in Newfoundland was a new species, E. ( T. ) nigracanthus (Hann, 1990). Hann (1990) also suggested that the status of European groups is uncertain. The records of E. glacialis from Asia are limited to a few localities. The type specimens of this species were collected from Commander Island (Lilljeborg, 1887). Miyadi (1937) and Ueno (1938) found this species on the two northernmost of the Kuril islands, Paramushir and Shumshu (Ž g. 1).
