SEH News Short report concerning the Taxonomic Committee of SEHThe Taxonomic Committee of SEH deals with the taxonomic and nomenclatural status mainly of the European herpetofauna. Taxonomic issues are newly described species, resurrections of former synonyms, upgrading subspecific names to specific rank, validity problems etc. whereas nomenclatural issues refer to the CODE and its rules.Recent topics are new European species such as Vipera walser, upgradings to species rank (e.g. Timon nevadensis, Hierophis carbonarius, Natrix astreptophora and others), and nomenclatural issue include assumed application of the priority rule by replacing genus names by “excavated” older and overlooked names (e.g. Ichthyosaura, Sclerophrys).An actual, peculiar case concerns the species epithet of the Stromboli lizard, Podarcis raffonei auct. (Mertens, 1952) where the original ending raffonei has recently been challenged in favour of raffoneae, since Mertens has dedicated this taxon to the deceased wife of the collector (Trischitta) whose family name was Raffone. Because I was asked to give my opinion in this case, I describe it here in some more detail:The etymology paragraph of Mertens’ paper reads: “Benannt ist die Rasse, dem Wunsche des Sammlers entsprechend, nach Raffone, dem Familiennamen seiner verstorbenen Frau!”.
