Short Notes Eggs of Bufo calamita are toxic to Rana dalmatina tadpoles Hans Heusser Frohberg 49d, CH-8645 Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland Eggs, hatchlings and tadpoles of Bufo marinus are known to be toxic to tadpoles of different anuran species that prey upon them (Crossland, 1998a; Crossland and Alford, 1998; Crossland and Azevedo-Ramos, 1999). The eggs of the European Bufo calamita are eaten by the tadpoles of different sympatric anuran species, but a toxic effect on the predators has not been mentioned (compilation in Sinsch, 1998). In spring 2000 the author tested intra- and interspeci c spawn predation by the tadpoles of Rana dalmatina , an early breeding European brown frog that may have a priority effect against species that breed later in the same pond. From May to July predator tadpoles ( R. dalmatina ) were kept outdoors in containers with 10 l tapwater without any bottom sediments and plants. The tadpoles were given a de nite number of eggs of Bufo calamita (cuts of strings with the jelly envelope) as prey (table 1). During the experiments the tadpoles were also fed with the commercial sh food Tetra Pond R ° . The experiments were performed at Jona, near Zurich,
