Another seed: Studies in Gnostic mythology Another seed: Studies in Gnostic mythology by GEDALIAHU A. G. STROUMSA (Nag Hammadi Studies, 24) 1984. (xii, 195 p.) ISBN 90 04 07419 8 cloth Gld. 64.- The work seeks to analyze some of the core myths of the Gnostics called "Sethian" by the Christian heresiologists, and to understand the rationale for this name. This task is mainly accomplished through a comparison of the "Sethian" myths and themes in some of the Nag Hammadi tractates with the reports of the Church Fathers. In many cases, these myths and themes are traced back to Jewish exegetical traditions. Furthermore, a tentative reconstruction of the early exegesis of the "Sons of God" (Gen 6:2) as "Sons of Seth" is offered. This reconstruction clarifies the Jewish background of early Gnostic thought. Finally, echos and repercussions of Gnostic myths in Hermetic texts and in Manichaeism are analyzed in some detail. This analysis of Gnostic mythology, conducted both genetically and structurally, underlines the centrality of sexual themes, and shows how the dualistic vision of history corresponds to the dualistic anthropology of the Gnostic Weltanschauung. It also seeks to explain the hermeneutical basis of this radical revolt against the Jewish God, and the core of the Church Fathers' polemics against the movement. E. J.
