DERRETT Blockley, England The blessing of the children is no longer' understood in the sentimental sense once common. Jesus may have been fond of children-people who have none of their own often are-but it is not supposed that the pericope owes its existence to that.2 Not long ago it was suspected that the pericope proved the existence of a bap- tismal liturgy, and that Mk 10:14 4 (yi xmX6E<E) refers to some such motif.3 This is now generally abandoned,4 rightly-as we shall see. Strange things, but plausible, are said nowadays about the pericope. An excellent treatment is found in a somewhat obscure 1 G. Klein, Ärgernisse. Haenchen, Der Weg Jesu (Berlin 21968), 344 rightly warns against reference to past or present 'child psychology'; at 346 he interprets 'child' as one who is ambitionless, 'child' means not child, but 'humble' (ibid., 347, 349).
