BOOK REVIEW GIGNAC Francis Thomas: A Grammar of the Greek Papyri of the Roman and Byzan- tine Periods, Volume I Phonology pp. viii + 365 (1977?), Volume II Morphology pp. xxi + 450 (1981), Testi e Documenti per lo Studio dell Antichità LV. 1-2, Istituto Editoriale Cisalpino, La Goliardica, Milano L. 36000, 120,000. These are the first two volumes of what may be a five volume work, two volumes on syntax and one on word composition. They are planned to do the same for the papyri of the Roman and Byzantine period as Mayser's Grammatik did for the Ptolemaic papyri. I have thankfully used Mayser over the years and have long felt the need for a work such as Professor Gignac is now supplying. As well as dealing with phonology, volume I has some useful introductory mat- ter, a table of contents, preface, a bibliography, giving, first, a list of editions, next, a list of reference works, periodicals and grammatical literature, next, Greek authors and their works, and then general abbreviations and a guide to the ' methods of citation and tables of vowels and consonants.
