THE DECLENSION OF THE -(i) ω v COMPARATIVES IN NEW TESTAMENT GREEK BY G. MUSSIES University of Utrecht The use of -(l)ovoc, -(i)ov-eq and -(i)ov-as side by side with the classical Attic comparatives in and -(l)ou-ç is to be observed occasionally in Greek literature from Homer onwards. No doubt these new forms provided opportunity for stylistic variation in literary language, e.g. Od. 277 ot 7tMoveç x«xiouq, but they also had the obvious advantage for current speech of creating a system which was more consistent and corresponded with an existing pattern of declension, e.g. that of c76?pwv. For this reason the newer paradigm tended gradually to replace the suppletive type used in ordinary language (cf. E. SCHwYZER Gr. Gyamm. I, p. 536/537, n. i), and such a process is what we actually find taking place in Hellenistic Greek. MAYSER has pointed out that in the last two centuries before Christ the proportion between the use of the older Attic and newer Koine forms in the Ptolemaic papyri had become about 1,7: 1. And, although much new material has been published since MAYSER drew up these statistics in 1938 (Gyamm. der gr. Pap. aus der Ptol. Zeit 12, p. 60),
