Book Notes 1) Continuing Series A) RPP Hans Dieter Betz et al. (eds.), Religion Past and Present 12 Sif-Tog (Leiden, Brill, 2012) cx + 737 pp. ISBN 9004163324 €249. This latest instalment includes obvious and substantial entries on Spirit, Sin and Theology with allied topics, but geographical subjects, Biblical books and a piece on the synoptic problem find their place. The usual array of allegedly relevant topics, such as socialism, society, and even suicide are also included. As is typical, “religion” here, unless specifically targeted on, say, Tibetan Buddhism or Sikhism, tends always to be written from a Christian perspective, so that the entry on Sri Lanka devotes more space to the minority Christian population and its leadership than to the island’s other faiths. Those who consult this encyclopaedia also need to be aware that its (mainly German) contributors look at most issues from a European perspective and with many examples taken from Lutheranism, German history and culture, and with many a German worthy written about. That is fully expected, given this series’ origins but one does wonder how necessary this English version may be, expensive as each volume is. The repetition of its extensive introductory matter in each volume http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Novum Testamentum Brill
