BOOK NOTES BOOK NOTES 1.) The Coptic Gnostic Library. Koninklijke Brill have served Gnostic studies well. They publish the monographs Nag Hammadi and Manichaean Studies (= NHMS ), formerly Nag Hammadi Studies (= NHS ); the English translation of The Nag Hammadi Library now in its 4th edition, the original being in 1977; and the Facsimile Edition of the Nag Hammadi Codices , now complete in 12 volumes. But the major study editions are the 14 volumes of The Coptic Gnostic Library edited with English trans- lation, introduction and notes. These splendid volumes contain the 52 tractates from Nag Hammadi— 45 separate titles comprising c . 30 fairly complete texts and c . 10 more fragmentary texts—and are familiar to those who work closely with this literature. Brill has reissued all 14 volumes in a Ž ve-volume paperback set for $495 (Leiden: Brill, 2000), c . 5,000 pages ISBN 9004117024. These have been reprinted photo- mechanically and with only a couple of minor exceptions the original contents have not been changed. Thus the Forward to each of the original hardbacks (by James Robinson) is repeated throughout, despite the inevitably now outdated or superseded editorial decisions.
