499 birds to eat. This is an interesting parallel to Anat's treatment of Mot in KTU 1.6 (= CTA 6) II 34-7. Day quotes the preceding lines of the Ugaritic text at p. 16, n. 40 but omits the lines referring to the birds eating the scattered remains of Mot (a detail which is inconvenient for the view apparently espoused by Day that Mot here represents the corn being sowed). The "chaff" in Isa. xvii 13 (see p. 101) also reminds one of the destruction of Mot. However, despite the questions which have been raised above, the reviewer is full of admiration for Day's achievement in producing this comprehensive account of a complex subject. We can look forward to fur- ther works by him of similarly high quality on similar themes. Indeed we are informed (p. 119, n. 120) that a book on the Molech cult is on its way. It will be eagerly awaited. Durham John F. Healey BOOK LIST M. V.
