LABUSCHAGNE Groningen Let me begin by expressing my gratitude that I was given the op- portunity to write a reply to the article "Pentateuchal patterns" by P. R. Davies and D. M. Gunn on pp. 399-406 of the present issue of VT. Since I am working on a book about divine speech in the Pen- tateuch, I shall not deal here with all the misunderstandings in this article, but confine myself to making a few comments in order to clear up some main points. Before I do so, I want to thank the writers for their criticism from which I have gained profit in spite of their scepticism and their opposition to what I have written. Their reaction makes me feel constrained to admit that I have not made it easy for the readers of my article in hT 32 (1982), pp. 268-96, because I assumed too much, took too many things for granted. This unfortunately led to formulations containing assump- tions that were clear to myself but not necessarily to every reader. The reason for this is that when I became aware of
