SHORT NOTES 2 KINGS XVIII 14-16 AND THE ANNALS OF SENNACHERIB Professor John BRIGHT argues 1) that in the complex 2 Kings xviii 13-xix 37 2) only xviii 14-16 corresponds with The Annals of Sennacherib 3), and that this passage 'parallels perfectly' the Assyrian record: 'no mentionable conflict exists between the two'. BRIGHT concludes that xviii 14-16 refers to Sennacherib's western campaign in 701 B.C. The rest of the complex then refers to an attack on Jerusalem, and a remarkable deliverance of the city, towards the end of Sen- nacherib's reign, about 688 BC. BRIGHT gives a good review of previous attempts made by scholars to sort out the material in xviii 13-xix 37. No attempt at reconstruction can be made in a short study such as this. Suffice it so say, in connection with the supposed campaign of 688 BC, that it is unsatisfactory to postulate an event for which there is no evidence whatever 4). The purpose of this note is simply to question whether 'no men- tionable conflict exists' between the two sources equated by BRIGHT. xviii 14-16 does not mention a siege of Jerusalem 5).
