But the extermination with which God has repeatedly threatened his people will not spare even the lowest of the people. Hence the sense of universality general- ly attributed to the expression. In course of time, however, the expression lost its original meaning and came to be used as a proverb- ial saying emphatically denoting an unlimited universality. If this is the true meaning, the sense of 1 Kings xiv 10 and parallel passages will be : 'I will cut off to ... all males, no one excepted'. Malta P. P.
