THE CH'IN DOCUMENTS DISCOVERED IN HUPEI IN 19751) BY A. F. P. HULSEWÉ When digging a drainage canal in the Shui-hu-ti area of the Hsiao-kan District of Yfn-meng Prefecture in # *fit#, some fifty miles north of Hankow, the workers dis- covered a tomb, which was subsequently excavated with the help of the Hupei Provincial Museum between 18 and 29 December 1975. The tomb was a shaft tomb, more than five meters deep and oriented at 285°, i.e. slightly north of due west; at the bot- tom there was a tomb chamber, constructed of heavy timbers. Water had penetrated into the chamber, where it stood 78 cm. high, and also into the coffin, which contained the corpse of a man, slightly over forty years of age. The chamber as well as a niche in the eastern face of the shaft contained the usual burial gifts, but it was inside the coffin that a veritable treasure was found. This find consisted of more than one thousand or even more than eleven hundred well preserved bamboo strips covered with writing, which soon proved that the tomb and its invaluable con- tents belonged to the Ch'in period.
