Brill, 1961, xvii + 329 pp., in -4°. In spite of the importance given to them by modern psychology, there can be little doubt that sexual habits are one of the least revealing facets in the study of a culture. The gamut of variations is extremely narrow and, by the nature of the thing, bound to repeat themselves in all societies and during all periods in history. The general attitudes towards sexual activities of a people is another, perhaps more fruitful domain, but an extremely subtle one, often involving philosophical and theological considerations seemingly far distant from the act they influence. The present book attempts to discuss both aspects of the problem as they are seen in China, from the beginnings of Chinese history to the end of the Ming dynasty.
