Th ereafter, I adopt the following order for discussion: books treating general themes, monographs on individual Presocratic phi- losophers, and finally, collections of papers. Th e learned world has had to wait close to half a century for a fully authorized and comprehensive edition of Th e Derveni Papyrus . 1 Th e year after it was discovered in a remotely situated tomb near Th essaloniki, this amazing find was announced by Stylianos Kapsomenos in Gnomon 35 (1963), 222-23. Kapsomenos, who had been given the right to edit the papyrus by the Macedonian archaeological authorities, published an incomplete text of the ‘Orphic papyrus roll of Th essalonika’ the following year ( Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists 2 (1964-5), 3-12, with Greek version in Archaiologikon Deltion 19 (1964), 17-25), but nothing more before he died in 1978.
