Odo Casel SHORTER NOTES ODO CASEL When a volume was planned in honor of Dom ODO I, having no technical contribution to offer, set down in an Open Letter to him some reflections on the general significance of his work 2). More than five years have elapsed since his death, but I venture to print here the substance of the Letter. Dear Dom Casel, On this occasion we think with warm gratitude of all that you have done to enlarge our knowledge and understanding of religious history. The individuality and depth of your contribution are already manifest in the two earliest writings of yours which are known to me, De philosophorum Graecorum silentio ynystico and Actio in liturgischer herwendung (Jb. f. Lit. IIIC?2I, 34ff.). In these works you do full justice to the esoteric and the exoteric alike. There are arcana, whether of Eleusis or philosophy or mystical theology, and there is ritus ser- vandus, which may be performed without overtones, just as there is the religion of the once-born and the religion of the twice-born. Hellenistic Judaism and early Christianity could alike appreciate the value of ancient philosophy in general.
