The Extraordinary Story of Missionaries in Africa . By MAR- TIN BALLARD. Oxford: Greenwood World Publishing, 2008. 224 pp. ISBN-10 1846450322 ISBN-13 978-1846450327 (hbk.). Martin Ballard provides a comprehensive overview of modern Christian mis- sion in Africa south of the Sahara. With modern mission understood as the proselytizing endeavours of post-enlightenment Christianity, he focuses on the 19th century, with some considerations of late 18th century activities and limited forays into the 20th century, which he considers beyond the “Mission- ary Era” proper. In the first chapter, he discusses some of the social and intel- lectual background for this new type of missionaries, namely the pietistic and evangelical strands of Protestantism, the tensions between European settlers/ slave-owners and the anti-slavery movements, and the establishment of mission societies in affirmation of or opposition to philosophical enlighten- ment. With the second chapter, Ballard enters the field of mission in sub- Saharan Africa, and he starts out with the Christian repercussions of the “repatriation” of freed African slaves in Sierra Leone and Liberia during the first half of the 19th century.
