At a time when almost every new book on any given topic claims―far too emphatically and often undeservedly―that it represents the first ever study on a subject, it is certainly refreshing to read in the introduction to this recent analysis of Hellenistic and Roman funerary epigrams that it “is just one more”. While the author demonstrates an obvious appreciation of previous scholarship, for which he should be commended, one must also stress that W.’s study transforms a “seemingly conventional approach” to a well-known corpus of epigraphic material into an innovative, thoughtful, and well structured analysis of the deceased and their relationship with the gods as expressed through funerary texts.
