The Expansion of the Aitolian League, 280-260 Bc

The Expansion of the Aitolian League, 280-260 Bc THE EXPANSION OF THE AITOLIAN LEAGUE, 280-260 BC BY JOHN D GRAINGER The emergence and growth of the Aitolian League was a major geopolitical event in Hellenistic Greece, on a par with, but earlier than, the growth of the better-known Achaian confederacy in the Peloponnese The league had barely survived the violent attentions of various Macedonian kings and warlords from Philip II to Kassandros, and its growth was both sudden and, as I hope to show, politically creative The expansion of the league out of its Central Greek mountain fastness has been very largely explained by reference to the records of men attending meetings of the Amphiktyony at Delphil), but there are other details in these records which have been ignored, and which compel an adjustment to the hitherto accepted chronology of this expansion This in turn will suggest a new understanding of its character, and thus of the league itself in this early phase The first growth of the league came about thanks to Philip II in 338, when he presented Naupaktos to the Aitolians2 ) The sur- rounding section of Ozolian Lokris also became Aitolian at the same time3) This was followed by an Aitolian seizure http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Mnemosyne Brill

Abstract

THE EXPANSION OF THE AITOLIAN LEAGUE, 280-260 BC BY JOHN D GRAINGER The emergence and growth of the Aitolian League was a major geopolitical event in Hellenistic Greece, on a par with, but earlier than, the growth of the better-known Achaian confederacy in the Peloponnese The league had barely survived the violent attentions of various Macedonian kings and warlords from Philip II to Kassandros, and its growth was both sudden and, as I hope to show, politically creative The expansion of the league out of its Central Greek mountain fastness has been very largely explained by reference to the records of men attending meetings of the Amphiktyony at Delphil), but there are other details in these records which have been ignored, and which compel an adjustment to the hitherto accepted chronology of this expansion This in turn will suggest a new understanding of its character, and thus of the league itself in this early phase The first growth of the league came about thanks to Philip II in 338, when he presented Naupaktos to the Aitolians2 ) The sur- rounding section of Ozolian Lokris also became Aitolian at the same time3) This was followed by an Aitolian seizure
