Lyon, 1984. 272 p. Pr. FF. 150,-. The analysis of the role of nature, or rather of the manifold manifestations of nature, both as frame of reference for human behaviour and as decor for the stories told by Homer and Hesiod, forms the object of this study. Those who expect a learned treat- ment will be disappointed, since Mrs. Bonnafe (henceforth B.) almost completely refrains from engaging in a discussion with existing scholarship. For this one had better consult W. Elliger, Die Darstellung der Landschaft in der griechischen Dichtung, (Berlin/New York, 1975) whose name one will look for in vain in B.'s bibliography. This (from a scholarly point of view unsatisfactory) approach has been deliberately adopted as appears from the Intro- duction, "On s'est efforce de partir d'une lecture personelle des textes, et non des conclusions auxquelles 6taient parvenues ant6rieurement les specialistes de chaque oeuvre" (8); at the same time it explains the charm of this book, viz. the freshness and richness of many of the interpretations http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Mnemosyne Brill

Abstract
