Abstract

70 of Cornford (Plato and Paymenides), who pointed out that Plato, Paym. 164 b-165 e, probably is critical of just this theory (see Cornford, ad loc. ) . Examples of arbitrariness in argument are e.g. the fact that Anaximenes' theory of is nowhere mentioned in the first part of this study (it would have conflicted with Sinnige's theory, p. 40 ff., that in the early period represents the concept of nothingness). Ch. II A, on Xenophanes, constructs a complicated interpretation by conflating our secondary evidence with Sinnige's own theories in the foregoing chapter, but significantly omits the one line in which Xenophanes used the word (B 28). Xenophanes spoke of re ev; for Sinnige this becomes number-speculation and links him up with the Pythagoreans. But what is the meaning of number- speculation in relation to one number only? Important to Xeno- phanes is the opposition between his one God and the many gods of tradition. SOESTERBERG, Chr. Huygenslaan 26 J. MANSFELD DE NOVIS LIBRIS IUDICIA G. J. D.
