All the descriptions and mentions of the organ up to the XIIIth century are covered. Besides, the author has separately inserted the Greek and Roman texts, and translations have been supplied. Then he has discussed all the representations and archaeological discoveries and nearly all the literature published up to the time of writing. There is a complete collection of photographs and drawings. Moreover, the author has written a separate chapter (short and in outlines, but clear) about Greek and Roman music as an introduction to the study of the sound of the organ in antiquity.
