An Auspicious Beginning

An Auspicious Beginning KRONO_4,1_F2_2-6 6/17/04 9:43 AM Page 2 Marlene P. Soulsby An Auspicious Beginning This issue of KronoScope celebrates the life’s work of J. T. Fraser on the occasion of his eightieth birthday, marked on the calendar in May, 2003. It celebrates beginnings as well as continuity. The study of time as an integrated, interdisciplinary endeavor began with the efforts of J. T. Fraser, and continues because of the impact of those efforts and the spirit of the man. The tributes that appear in these issues speak of inspiration, dialogue, connection, and a remark- able humanity; they are a small sampling from the many scientists, scholars, poets, artists, musicians, and friends who have shared thoughts and experi- ences of time with this Renaissance man and mas- ter “timesmith.” It is impossible to place J. T. Fraser in any one dis- ciplinary niche. He is a scientist, an engineer, and a humanist who has been able to bridge the distance between disciplines in order to engage fruitfully in a “multicultural,” transdisciplinary dialogue that goes beyond the dichotomy of C. P. Snow’s two cul- tures. For him, intellectual discovery is the founda- tion of human values; for him, relationships nurture the sense http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Kronoscope Brill
