Independent African Christianity: Its Study and Its Future "An Englishman called Ted who has been out of his mind for five years has become normal." Af. Indep. Church I; 200 WHAT has happened to Christianity in Africa? The Christian Mission - that massive altruistic enterprise (occasionally it went hand in hand with imperialism, of course)-which Europeans and Americans have been carrying out for well over a hundred years surely must have many things to show for itself. It does! Until recent years, it has shouldered large portions of the burdens of education and medical healing. In the 1950's we recognized that most of the nationalist leaders had spent their formative years in missionary schools proving that in fundamentals Christianity is a revolutionary doctrine. True, there was more emphasis upon an ineffable if ever-present Deity and upon eschatological fulfillments than is compatible with "the need to know and do" of the revolutionary. But the contribution in the colonial period is apparent. The impact of Christianity upon public or private values in the era of independence is less clear. It is uncertain how Christianity can contribute to the resolute self- discipline even selfsacrifice that is so desirable a public value in the face of grievous underdevelopment.
