Storia e Archeologia del Commercio nell’Oriente Antico

Storia e Archeologia del Commercio nell’Oriente Antico Book Reviews / JESHO 54 (2011) 270-309 285 Luca PEYRONEL, Storia e Archeologia del Commercio nell’Oriente Antico . Preface by Paolo Matthiae. Studi Superiori 559. Rome: Carocci Editore, 2008. 216 pp. ISBN: 978-88-430-4501-3 (pbk.). € 19,70. This book presents a thematic and conceptual review of the dynamics of long-distance exchange and commerce in the Bronze Age Near East. The study opens with a short ‘Preface’ by Paolo Matthiae, stating the need for a ‘methodological contamination’ of archaeology with other social and humanistic disciplines in order to ultimately get a better understanding of the behaviour, or rather the social practices, of ancient Near Eastern societies. Chapter 1, ‘Teoria e Pratica dell’Archeologia del Commercio’, presents the epistemological and methodological bases of the study, describing the interpretative models in economic anthropology usually employed by archaeologists: namely, the Marxist approach (with an emphasis in class struggle, the modes and means of production and the infrastructure- superstructure relationship); the substantivist approach (which establishes a qualitative difference between the nature of ancient, pre-capitalist econo- mies and the one constituting a market-based economy); and the formalist approach (which applies concepts drawn from market-based economies to the study of ancient or pre-capitalist economies).
