The Sociology of Southeast Asia. Transformations in a Developing Region

KING, The Sociology of Southeast Asia. Transformations in a Devel- oping Region. NIAS Reference Library 3. Copenhagen: NIAS Press, 2008. xvii + 352 pp. ISBN: 978-87-91114-59-5 (hbk.); 978-87-91114-60-1 (pbk.). £50.00 (hbk.); £16.99 (pbk.). The cover caption says: “One of the main problems faced by teachers and students who have a scholarly interest in Southeast Asia is the lack of gen- eral user-friendly texts in the social sciences. A single-authored, integrated introductory volume on the sociology of Southeast Asia is long overdue. This book is the first of its kind.” All of this is correct, I think. The book by Victor King is definitely a must-read for almost any student of Southeast Asia—except senior scholars who are familiar with the literature in the social sciences of this region. The book delivers an overview of important texts on societies, politics, political economy, and cultures of Southeast Asia. It is something like a structured excerpt of these texts rather than an original contribution to the field or a topical interpretation of the literature. It will be a very useful textbook for courses on http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient Brill
