Scriptural Allusions and Exegesis in the Hodayot 142 Book Reviews / Dead Sea Discoveries 16 (2009) 117–154 Scriptural Allusions and Exegesis in the Hodayot . By Julie A. Hughes. STDJ 59. Leiden: Brill, 2006. Hardcover. Pp. xiv + 270. € 98.00/US$ 146.00. ISBN 9789004147393. The present volume is a revised version of J. Hughes’ doctoral dissertation that she wrote at the University of Manchester and defended in 2004. The ambitious goal of Hughes is no less than uncovering all biblical allusions in five Hodayot and exploring the impact of these in the reading process. Building upon work by previous scholars, such as Svend Holm-Nielsen, Émile Puech, Michael Douglas, and Carol Newsom, Hughes succeeds in what she sets out to do, which, given the rich biblical tapestry underlying the Hodayot , is a fine accomplishment. The book consists of six chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the documents and the scholarship on the Hodayot . Hughes presents scholarly views on the order of the columns, the Cave 4 manuscripts, genre, poetic structure, and Sitz im Leben . Her presentation is very thorough and helpful for any reader who is not specialized in the Hodayot . The evidence from the Cave 4, according to Hughes, http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Dead Sea Discoveries Brill
