A New Fragment of Xjudges A NEW FRAGMENT OF XJUDGES ESTHER ESHEL Bar-Ilan University HANAN ESHEL Bar-Ilan University MAGEN BROSHI Israel Museum Until recently, only three copies of the Book of Judges were known from Qumran. The fi rst copy was found in Cave 1, 1QJudg (1Q6), and was published in 1955. 1 Forty years later, in 1995, two manuscripts from Cave 4: 4QJudg a (4Q49) and 4QJudg b (4Q50) were published. 2 In 2001, a fragment of an additional manuscript of Judges held in the Sch ø yen collection (MS 2861) was published by James Charlesworth, and was labeled XJudges. 3 This fragment includes parts of Judg 4:5 – 6. Three unidenti fi ed fragments, labeled as “XBiblical Text?,” were pub- lished by Hagai Misgav in the same plate as XJudges. 4 Hanan Eshel was able to identify these fragments as parts of the same scroll. 5 Emile Puech added two new fragments of the same manuscript: the fi rst fragment, which includes Judg 1:10 – 12, is held in a private collection. 6 The second one is another fragment published in the same plate as the above mentioned fragments, and was labeled as “XUnidenti fi ed Text 2.” 7 1 D. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Dead Sea Discoveries Brill
