Exegetical Notes on 4Q225 "Pseudo-Jubilees" EXEGETICAL NOTES ON 4Q225 “PSEUDO-JUBILEES” JAMES KUGEL Bar Ilan University The texts 4Q225 – 227 “Pseudo-Jubilees” were published by James VanderKam and J. T. Milik. 1 These texts were classi fi ed as “Pseudo- Jubilees” because, while not part of the book of Jubilees itself, they share certain characteristics with that book, notably the reference to Satan as Mastemah, that is, “the angel 2 of loathing” ( hmfçmh rç or hmfçm rçh ), 3 and the dating of events with reference to the number of jubilees. One part of 4Q225 deals with the famous story of Abraham’s offering up of his son Isaac as a sacri fi ce (Genesis 22), and this sec- tion has already been the subject of several studies. 4 Despite this 1 H.
