This image is deliberate, for her work resembles a piece of music produced by different instru- ments, and the Bible, as one player, must learn to keep harmony with the others with intertextual respect. Significantly, the final chapter, "Why, Why, Why, Delilah?", which more or less begins with the 'biblical' Delilah, about whom and about whose motives so little is written in Judges 16, yet so much is assumed, ends with the magnificent Delilah of De Mille's film Samson and Delilah. Who is the real Delilah, for us? Unfortunately this book was pub- lished too soon for its author to see Liz Hurley in the role. Even a critic like myself found it hard to maintain my male gaze as sleep overcame me during this latest cinematic version of Judges 16.
