With notable exceptions, it has been either neglected or treated in a narrow and superficial manner (and this is espe- cially true of studies of the earliest literature). Few who have turned their attention to this field have possessed sufficient depth of knowledge of the sources or awareness of the concomitant inter- pretative issues raised to elicit any confidence in the lasting value of their contributions. The subject is in clear need of a definitive study. Indeed, it is in clear need of the kind of definitive study we would expect to find in a book with this title.
