Cl. £24.50. ISBN 1-85075-646-5. The Graeco-Roman context of early Christian literature is a subject which should attract more serious attention than it does at present. With notable exceptions, it has been either neglected or treated in a narrow and superficial manner (and this is espe- cially true of studies of the earliest literature). Few who have turned their attention to this field have possessed sufficient depth of knowledge of the sources or awareness of the concomitant inter- pretative issues raised to elicit any confidence in the lasting value of their contributions. The subject is in clear need of a definitive study. Indeed, it is in clear need of the kind of definitive study we would expect to find in a book with this title. Unfortunately, the content of Garrison's work, like so many in the field of Christian origins, does not bear much relation to its title, containing, as it does, an eclectic series of
